There are many different kinds of water for us to drink. However, if we truly want to live a long and healthy life, we need to drink water that is:

1. High in quality, and
2. Able to eliminate active oxygen.
The water that can do this is alkaline ionized water.

Electrolyzed Water

Ordinary drinking water (well water or municipal water) is purified using some sort of water purifying device that removes particulate and residual salts, if this water is then placed in an electrolysis tank and two electrodes inserted in the water, and a voltage (of approximately 25V) is applied, the result is electrolyzed water.

Naturally, this produces two types of water: positively and negatively charged water.

Ionized Water

The negative electrode produces active hydrogen water, which contains large quantities of active hydrogen and has strong reducing or anti- oxidant properties. We call this ionized water, it has a pH of 8-10.

Minerals and salt ions such as Na+ and Ca2+ accumulate in quantity at the respective electrodes, as follows.

At the negative electrode Na+H2 = Na H+ H
Ca+2H2O =» Ca(OH)2 + 2H
At the positive electrode OH-
Cl-

The active hydrogen in this ionized water reacts with active oxygen in the body to produce harmless water. Thus, ionized water is very beneficial to bodily health. It also clusters less and is absorbed more easily.

Ionized water offers immediate health benefits by removing active oxygen from the system. But it also offers preventive medical benefits in terms of overall health improvement and metabolic enhancement, simply because it is high quality drinking water.

Acid Water

The water produced at the positive electrode is known as acid water (or oxidized water). It contains mainly non-metallic negative ions it is possible to generate either strong acid water (pH of around M) or weak acid water (pH of around 5.5) in general, acid water is unsuitable for drinking, but it has astringent properties for the skin, especially weak acid water.

Toner is weak acid water with a slight amount of fragrance added.

In is good for after you wash your face. Strong acid water is a powerful disinfectant, it even kills antibiotic-resistant staphylococcus.

Accordingly, it has many uses as a cleanser, a cosmetic compound, and a disinfectant for dental and medical equipment. Moreover, since it immediately turns into ordinary water (2OH = > H2OO) there is no need to clean up after disinfecting, unlike with other disinfectants, which makes it more efficient.

Strong acid water is used in hospitals to clean and disinfect floors and walls.

Electrolyzed water is chemically unstable, as time passes, it naturally turns into more chemically stable substances, such as H2O, H2, and Cl2, Unless carefully preserved, it has to be used within a week, or two weeks at most. Ionized water is even more unstable than acid water, so it has to be kept in sealed containers and isolated from outside energy sources (heat, light, vibration, etc.). Under these conditions it is usable for about a week. Consequently, it should be stored in tinted glass containers, similar to beer bottles. Since the containers, themselves can be made from unstable substance ionized water should be stored in containers made from chemically stable compounds (do not store in plastic PET bottles) because as time goes by, ionized water produces bubbles and turns back into ordinary water.

The electrolysis tank should be made from materials with pharmaceutical resistant Properties. The size of the electrolysis tank is also one of the most important performance factors for water electrolyzers.

Not surprisingly, there are significant differences in material life span, performance (ORP, output volume), and price. It can be difficult to discern from external appearance how large the tank is, but the larger the electrolysis tank, the more electric power (wattage) it tends to use. Therefore, one way judge is to check the power of the usage rating.

In addition, since metal (dissolved minerals accumulate on the electrodes as a result of the electrolysis process, periodically it is necessary to reverse the polarity of the positive and negative electrodes.

Ionized Water : Previously Known Forms

Alkaline Ionized Water

Ionized water received approval as a medicinal drink from the then Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare in 1965. it was approved because it offers extremely good antioxidant properties that improve ones health by removing active oxygen from the body.

The criteria for approval were based solely on pH, and this caused many people to mistake alkaline ion water for distilled water used for medical purposes. A number of companies began manufacturing and selling alkaline ion water generators to make water with this pH) level. Only later did it become apparent that most of the water generated had the requisite pH level but no anti-oxidant properties and thus no medical benefits. The difference lay in the ORP. The Ministry had given approval to high quality alkaline ion water with an ORP of-25O mV. But in fact, much of what was being called alkaline ion water actually had a positive ORP, and thus offered no health or medical benefits.

It is possible to make alkaline ion water by taking ordinary tap water and

1. Filtering it through charcoal and removing particules.
2. Adding potassium hydroxide.
3. Adding detergent water. If you run a pH test or use litmus paper, the alkalinity can be readily verified. However, this is not true ionized water, because true ionized water has a negative ORP.

Mineral Water

Mineral water is water that contains dissolved minerals. Ordinary water, unlike distilled water, generally has some type of minerals dissolved in it. These minerals are usually alkaline metal or alkaline earth metal salts, typically Na, Ki Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and Zn. When these minerals are present in larger quantities, we refer to it as hard water. If the water contains smaller amounts, then we call it soft water. The longer the river, the more material is going to be present in the water, so lengthy continental rivers have harder water than relatively short Japanese rivers. In addition, the longer minerals are dissolved in the water, the harder it becomes. Not surprisingly, then, in Japan well water is harder than river water. Moreover, higher temperature water can hold more minerals content in solution, so warmer water is harder than cooler water. When the water is too hard, it can result in diarrhea or other physical problems, though this varies from person to person. People who have such problems have to drink water that has had the minerals removed. Conversely, if there are too few minerals in the water then they have to be supplemented. Not all the minerals in drinking water are absorbed by the body. Published research indicates that people who live in places with high calcium levels in the water have a lower incidence of osteoporosis and live longer than people in other areas. However, excessive calcium intake can lead to hardening of the arteries and kidney stones.

Salts formed by a chemical reaction between an acid and a base, a reaction which also produces water. The reaction involves a replacement of the metal bonded to a hydroxyl ion with hydrogen, yielding the salt and water.

Example: HCl + KOH =>KCl+ H2O
(hydrochloric acid)+ (potassium hydroxide) =(potassium chloride) +(water).

In this example, the salt produced is potassium chloride.

Municipal Water

Municipal water supplies have a reputation of tasting bad and smelling bad. But while it differs from area to area, general the better the source water, the better it tastes and smells. Water treatment plants all say that if the source of the water is no good then it is not easy to produce water that tastes good. People often complain about a bad after-taste and bad smell from tap water in Tokyo and Osaka, Nationally, only about 4O% of Japanese people drink water straight out of the tap.

The average just 3O% in major cities, and a recent survey in Tokyo indicated that 10% would not drink the tap water under any circumstances. Clearly, people feel they have to do something to tap water to make it palatable. For example, 1 % say that they chill the water, or use it to make tea or coffee. Others use water purifiers, water agitators, they heat it, cool it, or add bamboo ash.

Water generally tastes better on the Pacific Coast side of Japan, where rainfall totals are higher.

Municipal water quality depends greatly on the filtration process used by water treatment plants. Under the fast filtration method, a coagulant is added to the source water that causes particules to precipitate rapidly. In contrast, under the more traditional slow filtration method, the water is filtered slowly through sand, and bacterial action functions to purify the water. This method however cannot handle large volumes of water, and it is not well-suited to treating source water that itself is polluted. This method requires a sizable horizontal land space to operate, but it does produce good-tasting water. The City of Nagoya operates one water treatment plant using the slow filtration method, and people say the water it produces is very tasty. Newer types of equipment have developed using ozone treatment and other methods, but it is difficult to say that they work well. For now, the slow filtration method appears to be a luxury that is workable only for some. Water treatment plants take source water and filter out impurities to provide. Clean drinking water. If the source water is river water with large amounts of ammonia due to runoff into the stream, equally large amounts of salts have to be mixed with the water to detoxify the ammonia this results in a strong chlorine odor in the water. One water treatment plant that has to work with poor-quality source water is using smaller amounts of salts and introducing equipment that uses ozone bubbles to disinfect the water and break down organic compounds.

The Kanamachi Water treatment plant is the second largest water treatment facility in the Tokyo metropolitan area, supplying water from the Edogawa River to some 2.5 million customers.

Six years ago the plant began using an ozone treatment process to remove pollutants, after which the water is filtered through a 2.5 meter thick layer of activated charcoal in the bottom of the water tank. Unfortunately, the plant has only been able to utilize this process for one-third of the water it treats, still, its reputation has improved' and customers say their tap water does not smell as bad.

Ozone treatment has been used for over a century in Europe, where water source supplies are often of lower quality. Currently the method is in use at some European water treatment plants in contrast then are only 2O plants in Japan that are the ozone treatment type. This is not even 1 % of the number doing so in Europe.

Once upon a time, sailors who came ashore in Japan used to say that Japan had the world's best-tasting water.

Municipal water supplies vary in their mineral content, but regulations mandate a pH of 6.8 to 7.3.

Water treatment plants add at least O.l ppm of chlorine (Cl2) or chlorine-based compounds in order to decontaminate water supplies. Sometimes the chlorine content causes skin rashes it can also react with skin oils and organic compounds in the water to produce trihalomethane, dioxins, and other toxic substances. Chlorine is toxic, and in the past was used as a poisonous gas, although in treated water it is present only in minute quantities. Even so chlorine is ingest and used, ana1 it is toxic. Tap water can be boiled to get rid of chlorine while also disinfecting it, but boiling also gets rid of beneficial oxygen and minerals in the water. Recent reports state that environmental hormones (endocrine disrupters) have been detected in tap water, due to leaching from the water pipes. Nearly all municipal water supplies contain large amounts of active oxygen, and have positive ORP values.

Rain Water

Rain water is essentially is distilled water. In some locations rain water can contain sea water salts and various particulates.

The atmosphere contains a variety of toxic compounds, including carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and various nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2, N2O5 , etc). These compounds react with rain water to form carbonic acid (H2CO3 ), sulphurous acid (H2SO3), and especially during thunderstorms, nitric acid (N2O5 + H2O -> 2HIMO3). The result is acid rain, Once acid rain soaks into the ground, then ground water is no longer completely safe. Rainwater can also be polluted with agricultural chemicals.

Well water and spring water may enjoy a strong reputation, but it cannot be regarded as completely safe either.

Medical Benefits

It is now accepted that active oxygen is a cause of all illnesses. The human body is comprised of some 6O trillion cells, every cell contains in its nucleus deoxidize acid, or DNA, which provides the blueprint for how the body functions. When this DMA is damaged, it causes illness, though not always immediately. Moreover, damage to DNA speeds up the aging process. The vandal that causes this damage is active oxygen. It is critical to get rid of this active oxygen quickly by drinking ionized water. You should also eliminate life style factors that increase the level of active oxygen, such as cigarette smoking, drinking, and stress. Vigorous exercise also raises the level of active oxygen in the body. This is why athletes generally have shorter life spans. Exposure to radiation (including ultraviolet rays) also increases the level of active oxygen.

When the body is injured, it goes to work quickly to try and heal itself In order to kill bacteria, the body produces large amounts of active oxygen at the injury site. However, this active oxygen oxidizes the body and causes it to age. Anti-oxidants are compounds that remove active oxygen. The body produces its own natural anti-oxidant, an enzyme known as S.O.D. Some proteins and vitamins also have anti-oxidant properties, but the most effective anti-oxidant is active hydrogen, and the substance that contains active hydrogen in greatest quantities is ionized water.

The active hydrogen in ionized water reacts with active oxygen to produce water molecules that are very beneficial to the body and are completely harmless.

Ionized water helps prevent illnesses from occurring by replacing the water already in the body with healthier water. In essence, it cleanses the body. It is perfect for the era of preventive medicine in which we now live.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has recognized the following benefits of ionized water.

1. Inhibits abnormal fermentation in the digestive tract
2. Eases chronic diarrhea
3. Alleviates digestive abnormalities
4. Alleviates excess gastric acid

Many physicians have commented on television and in newspaper articles about the many benefits of ionized water for combating life style related illnesses, cancer, diabetes and dermatitis.

The following are some of the TV programs in recent years that have shown examples of using ionized water in medical treatment

1. Ionized water used to help heal gangrene in the lower limbs caused by diabetes
2. Ionized water heals severe decades-old case of atopic dermatitis
3. Cancer goes into remission after patient begins drinking ionized water.

More and more hospitals are using ionized water as part of treatment programs, more and more papers are being published documenting the treatment benefits.

Some of the hospitals that now use ionized water include Kyowa Hospital (Hyogo Prefecture), Kitari Institute Medical Center, Showa University Hospital Kanto Teishin Hospital Meiseki Hospital Nara Prefecture College of Medicine Hospital, lida Hospital(Nagano Prefecture), Tokyo Women's College of Medicine Hospital and Hanabatake Hospital (Kagoshima Prefecture).

However, while there are a great many water electrolyzes on the market only a few have been approved as medical accessory devices by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Clinical experience has shown, according to published findings, that ionized water brought about improvement in a number of conditions that did not respond to pharmaceutical treatment, including hypertension, asthma, lipid metabolism abnormalities, kidney disease, digestive disorders, and liver disorders, in addition, media reports indicate that Professor Shirahata of Kyushu University has experimentally verified that ionized water inhibits replication of cancer cells.

Water electrolyzers (for alkaline and acid water) should be standard equipment today in every household.

The following graphic provides more information about the types of materials you rnay have heard about, in addition to electrolyzed water.

Clinical Uses of Ionized Water

Rapid reduction in blood sugar levels in diabetes patients

One of the fundamental treatments for diabetic patients is of course, dietary treatment sometimes, though, dietary treatment alone is not enough- Dietary changes may not lower blood sugar levels as much as expected hospital observed that about 80% of diabetic patients who started intake of ionized water showed lower levels of blood sugar with in two weeks. This made it possible to reduce the amount of diabetic treatment medication administered.

Raid Healing of gangrene (of the lower limbs) due to diabetes

At least two diabetics with lower limb gangrene that had not shown signs of responding despite months of pharmaceutical treatment surprisingly were observed to have been completely cured of gangrene with in one month after starting intake of ionized water.

Rapid normalization of high uric acid levels in respiratory patients.

This hospital observed a decline in and normalization of uric acid levels anywhere from two to four weeks after starting intake of ionized water.

Rapid improvement in patients with hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver.

Ionized water intake is believed to be effective in treating both acute and chronic hepatitis and in treating cirrhosis of the liver.

A representative case for this hospital was that of a 6O-year-old male patient. Improvement was noted in his hepatitis cirrhosis one month after starting intake of ionized water. Thereafter, all treatments with medications, IVs' and diet were discontinued, and after six months of ionized water intake as the sole treatment, liver functioning had returned completely to normal.

Rapid healing of stomach and duodenal ulcers.

It is no exaggeration to say that intake of ionized water produced dramatic improvements in patients with stomach and duodenal ulcers, a particularly striking case is described below.

A 40-year-old patient had endured repeated attacks of duodenal ulcers over a 12-year period. One night the patient was transported to the hospital by ambulance after profusely vomiting blood. The patient was immediately admitted, and a blood transfusion of 10OOcc was administered along with supplemental fluids. After fasting, the patient was permitted to drink 1 -2liters of ionized water per day. Within a week after admission, improvement was noted. An inspection with a gastric camera showed no remaining ulceration, only indications of healing. The result surprised the hospital director, who personally attended the testing, as well as the patient.

What is especially noteworthy is the great number of cases in which there has been no recurrence of ulceration as long as ionized water intake continues. This is definitely a finding that merits attention.

Rapid improvement in high and low blood pressure levels.

It is not unusual for patients who have had high blood pressure for many years to find that their blood pressure returns to normal within anywhere from a week to a month when they drink ionized water. Here it is necessary to cite the personal experience of one hospital director. "For several years 1 suffered from high blood pressure, obesity, and high cholesterol. It was especially bad considering that I'm a doctor myself.

But, after I started taking ionized water, these conditions remarkably improved quickly. Today my blood pressure is 120/70, and my blood work and liver function test values are all with in normal ranges.

"I'm also acquainted with a woman in her 20's who had low blood pressure and a cold body constitution- Even in the middle of the summer she had to sleep under thick blankets. Within a week after starting to drink ionized water, her chilling disappeared and her blood pressure returned to normal."

Improvements in asthma, skin rashes, atopic dermatitis, and nasal allergies.

One female patient suffered from atopic dermatitis from shortly after birth until age 26.

She had tried fasting, a brown rice vegetarian diet, germanium, and a variety of other treatments, all to no avail. Her dermatologist even refused to continue seeing her. Just a month after she began drinking ionized water, the condition was about 80% resolved. This same hospital has seen a number of other cases of improvement in childhood asthma, skin rashes and pollen allergies after patients started drinking ionized water.

Improvement in nervous diarrhea.

One 16-year-old male high school student had suffered from chronic diarrhea for years, with no relief from any pharmaceutical treatment He needed to go to the toilet so often that he could not even ride the commuter train to school. However, his condition improved dramatically just two weeks after he started drinking ionized water.

Improvement in post-surgical chronic diarrhea.

A 4O year-old male patient had suffered from frequent diarrhea for seven years after emergency surgery to remove his ulcerated duodenum His condition had not responded to any drugs, but just two weeks after starting to drink ionized water, his fecal composition and his frequency of defecation returned to normal.

Improved kidney functioning.

Instances of dramatic improvement have been observed in cases of chronic nephritis and impaired kidney functioning after patients started drinking alkaline ionized water.

Dramatic reduction in incidence of newborn infant jaundice.

The obstetrics department of one hospital began using ionized water to mix powdered infant formula for newborn infants starting in May of 1985. Since that time, there have been virtually no cases of abnormal serum bilirubin in newborns. Ira other words, the incidence of newborn infant jaundice has gone down dramatically, in light of this result obstetricians should promptly look into using ionized water with their patients.

Rapid improvement in toxicity during pregnancy.

A patient who had to be hospitalized for toxicity during her sixth month of pregnancy recovered completely about one week after beginning ingestion of ionized water, and was ultimately able to carry the pregnancy to full term.

Menstrual difficulties.

One young woman patient suffered from menstrual difficulties throughout her teens and into her early 2Os. She went to a number of doctors hoping she could find even slight relief, but all of them told her it was a matter of physical constitution, and that there was nothing they could do. However, the hospital director was aware of ionized water and had confirmed its benefits, so he encouraged the patient to drink ionized water. Just two months after starting with ionized water, the patients menstrual cycle had become regular, and her menstrual cramps had greatly improved. There have been a number of other similar cases at this hospital since that time.

Recently there are more reports of women with cramps and other menstrual difficulties in their teens and 2O's.

Perhaps this is a result of chronic tension from our high-stress society, or of changes in dietary patterns.
There are also more reports of women experiencing problems at the time of menopause as well.

It is a fact that microorganisms in the digestive tract also secrete female hormones. A number of people believe that in light of this fact, women with these problems should be encouraged to drink ionized water.
